Heritage parks around the world are what inspire me professionally. The idea that trees I plant today will last beyond my lifetime keeps me looking forward to the future and the big picture.

Bio:
Yijun Lu is a Senior Landscape Architect in City Design at the City of Melbourne. She has 12 years’ experience both in Melbourne and internationally across a broad areas of landscape design. Her past works include national parks, university campuses, high-rise residential and commercial developments as well as public space and parks. She is currently working on various significant community based projects to enhance the experience of Melbourne.
How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?
I grew up during China’s rapid urbanisation period. As arguably the biggest urbanised movement in history, the improving quality of built environment is often considered as a sign of improving life quality.
What do you do?
I am a Senior Landscape Architect in City Design at the City of Melbourne, a multidisciplinary practice of approximately 50 practitioners. We have expertise in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, design review and industrial design.
What excites you in the work you do? Who or what inspires you professionally?
The nature of my works require me to work closely with various people, sometimes with contrasting skills and characters, e.g. engineers, artists, ecologists, developers, contractors, politicians, etc. To bring them together is always exciting.
Who or what inspires you professionally? What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?
Heritage parks around the world are what inspire me professionally. The idea that trees I plant today will last beyond my lifetime keeps me looking forward to the future and the big picture.
What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?
My proudest achievement is to see life, both for human and for flora and fauna, happening in the public spaces I have designed and delivered.

Featured Project Description:
University Square is a public space with trees, lawn, park and paved plaza surrounded by University of Melbourne and its facilities within the Melbourne Innovation District, serving various educational and medical institutes. Stage 1 upgrade of the project is to renew the aged tree lawn park to a dynamic and sustainable green space. The new park provides biodiverse and climate ready green space to accommodate the changing needs of one of the most demographically diverse communities in Australia.
