SYIREEN ISMAIL

Bio:

Syireen Ismail is a registered architect at the Australian design firm, Fender Katsalidis. Born in Malaysia, she was awarded the Malaysian International Scholarship Award to pursue her degrees in architecture at Melbourne’s RMIT University. She has since developed a real connection to this ever-evolving city. She has experience working in Australia and Malaysia across a range of different project scales and typologies from smaller scaled retail pavilions to a 500-acre tech-park development.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

As a child, playtime involved a lot of LEGO, cardboard boxes and soft furniture. We would build eccentric forms for our toys or spaces to battle in. When I was asked by my teacher about my dream job, I already knew I wanted to be an architect.

What do you do?

Whilst curating the architectural language during the design process, I also envision how elements are built, how they interact with the end user and what it may impact. I’m also responsible for the coordinating of information.

What excites you in the work you do?

The people around me. My work involves a lot of collaboration, so having an amazing team motivates me and brings excitement to the usual day to day work.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

My colleagues constantly inspire me to grow into a better architect. The architecture around Melbourne also gives me inspiration to cultivate exciting architecture for others to experience.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

Being involved in the development of Saint Moritz since the early concept design phases until its current state, where it’s nearing completion. Being highly involved and witnessing it grow were the proudest moments in my professional career thus far.

Featured Project Description:

Saint Moritz is set to become an enduring icon of famed St Kilda Beach, as well as a benchmark of quality and amenity. The development encompasses three residential buildings that form an ultra-luxurious precinct, establishing a new wave of architecture along the waterfront area. The natural splendour of distinctive flora, golden sand and rippling water characterise the building’s form and function, whilst achieving a harmonious balance within the surrounding environment.
