Bio:
In her 27-year career, Swarupa has managed the firm’s most complex urban construction projects in both education and government sectors, throughout NJ and NYC. She rose quickly within DIG to become the firm’s first minority female principal. She was named a Women of Influence by GlobeSt. Real Estate, a nationwide honor acknowledging Leadership, Mentorship & Advancement of ACE Careers, and a “Women of Achievement” by Professional Women in Construction – NJ.
How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?
I was intrigued by geometry shapes. The idea of drawing to create something always felt satisfying and still does. During a career fair in middle school, an architect visited to explain what she does, and her talk inspired me to choose architecture.
What do you do?
As principal, I manage large projects in both education and government sectors, mentor junior staff and support, advance and connect women to promote diversity across the AEC industries as a member of the Board of Directors of PWC-NJ.
What excites you in the work you do?
Overcoming challenges and problem solving to build your vision excites me to come in every day to work. I do this while mentoring firm’s younger architects from the lessons I learn daily.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?
Proud to be part of a movement where women are becoming a dominant force in what has traditionally been a male-dominated industry. I’m respected for my expertise and approach to solutions that address challenges during design and construction phases.

Totaling 80,000 SF, the state-of-the-art PreK through 5th grade school is situated on the first six floors of a new 34-story mixed-use building. The building features a gymatorium and cafeteria, 14 classrooms, two special education rooms and a ground-level dedicated entrance.
