SHANNON ROBINSON

Bio:

The Great designer, Shannon Robinson is an Associate at Duda|Paine Architects. Her engineering and construction background prior to entering the Architecture field has allowed her to approach design problems from a different perspective. She values sustainable and equitable practices in the built environment and strives to push projects, clients and the firm to continue to grow and think critically about these efforts. She holds a BS in Civil Engineering from Columbia University and an MArch from UNC Charlotte.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

My parents built our home from the ground up, so I spent a lot of time near construction. This shaped my world view, that anything can come from nothing. From art class to bridge rehabilitation to operating a backhoe…I’ve always loved making.

What do you do?

Lots! I search for opportunities, listen to folks, develop design ideas, raise concerns, gather data, propose interventions, collaborate with a team, investigate options…but mostly try to solve design problems as thoughtfully & holistically as I can.

What excites you in the work you do?

Seeing a design become a reality. With each project, I better understand the impacts of the built world. I hope to improve the quality of a project or the experience of a space by considering its effect on its context, users and environment.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I am constantly inspired by my peers. They are a dream team of artists, makers, businesspeople & designers who have endured challenging times, but their drive and dedication encourage me as they continue to produce beautiful and meaningful work.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

Managing my first large scale project from the design phases through permitting & construction to final completion. Seeing a design all the way to delivery is very fulfilling.
