Who or what inspires you professionally?

The vision of a fulfilling career with a happy home has been the image that I look forward to. Architects such as my mentor, Russell, who have been able to achieve that image inspire me.

Bio:

I am a fourth year architecture student from the Bronx. I immigrated from Nigeria and lived in Harlem, NY before moving to the Bronx. I am also a part of Kean University’s Division 3 Men’s Lacrosse Team and I currently work at Port Authority as an Engineer Aide Intern. Through my experiences and defining moments, I have taken a communal, story-telling and playful style of architecture and it is reflected in how I carry myself.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I first learned about architecture from a distant cousin who was able to evolve my aspiration for art into a passion for the built environment. Then I realized: Why paint on a standard 16 by 20 when you can make the whole world your canvas.

What do you do?

Professionally, I work in an engineer’s office, shadowing talented engineers as they perform their duties. I have also been able to do my own site surveys and conduct presentations of the progress on ongoing projects.

What excites you in the work you do?

The satisfaction of being able to look at the work at the end and be proud of myself. I also getting excited knowing that there isn’t a limit to how much I can learn with architecture, it encourages me to keep learning and trying new techniques.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

The vision of a fulfilling career with a happy home has been the image that I look forward to. Architects such as my mentor, Russell, who have been able to achieve that image inspire me.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

My proudest professional accomplishment has been getting recognized for the work and portfolio that I have been able to create. This includes but is not limited to my admission to Columbia University, a Design Daredevil Award and media about my story

Featured Project Description:

Rising Gems is located in an impoverished sector of Coalport, Trenton. Coalport faces several challenges, including homelessness, crime rates, and declining attraction. Rising Gems strives to enhance the community’s quality of life by empowering the younger generation with essential skills to inspire meaningful change in the city’s future. The resulting form of my structure appears to be shaped by human manipulation as it folds and twists into a dynamic design.
