Bio:
Melissa is a passionate Latina associate architect and project manager in the aviation industry, dedicated to shaping the future of infrastructure and inspiring positive change in her field. Beyond her professional achievements, Melissa is a mentor and role model, striving to inspire the next generation of young professionals—especially young Latinas—to pursue careers in architecture, engineering, and aviation.
How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?
I first became interested in architecture at a young age, drawn to how buildings shaped the world around me. The more I learned, the more I realized that architecture is about creating environments that positively impact people’s lives.
What do you do?
I am a project manager here at Newark Airport within the Port Authority Aviation department. Managing all core operating and capital projects.
What excites you in the work you do?
The opportunity to shape spaces that impact people’s daily lives. Through thoughtful design, I can create environments that inspire, enhance well-being, and foster community, leaving a lasting positive impact on both individuals and the public.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?
I believe my greatest accomplishment lies in my efforts beyond the workplace—particularly in inspiring the next gen of underrepresented architects. Which led to my recognition as Assoc of the Year by AIA NJ.

The brand-new, state-of-the-art Terminal A is now open. The 1 million square feet facility with 33 gates represents the largest single investment in New Jersey in the Port Authority’s history. The terminal boasts 21st century technology, inspiring public art, world-renowned retailers and locally inspired concessions.
