SAY IT LOUD - Tennessee Exhibitor
Tennessee Based Designer

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I am inspired by those who are innovating in the field and those in the field who place an emphasis on the well being of their colleagues and staff. Without a leader and team that cares, there can be no successful architecture.

MARIO DERRELL OLIVER

Bio:

Mario Oliver is a native Memphian and has loved art and design since childhood. His passion lies in helping people through design. Mario truly believes that good, thoughtful design can make the world a better place. When working on a project design, his focus is on user interaction both with the space and with other users within the space. Mario has a collective 12 years working in various fields associated with the built environment and is currently focused on becoming a licensed architect.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I formally learned of Architecture post college and I'd never considered it until after getting a BFA in art. I wanted my design skills to have a more practical use. I love helping people and creating spaces , so Architecture seemed perfect for me.

What do you do?

I am a design professional at a Memphis based firm. The firm primarily does healthcare, but we also do work in a variety of other fields, including Civic, Residential, and Hospitality. Healthcare work is a love of mine.

What excites you in the work you do?

My favorite part of working in Architecture is the variety of people I get to meet and help. It brings me great joy to help a client realize their dream in built form; then to see how that facility effects the wider community.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I am inspired by those who are innovating in the field and those in the field who place an emphasis on the well being of their colleagues and staff. Without a leader and team that cares, there can be no successful architecture.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

My proudest moment is getting my MFA. I am the first member of my family to get both an undergraduate and graduate degree. Growing up a poor kid from Memphis, it's a blessing to be where I am in life right now.

Featured Project Description:

Many social issues have been attributed to attainment of social interaction through T.V., social media, and online services. This project investigates how architecture can be used to engage people and encourage interaction between people. The project explores human behavior and how technology can be a tool to help and to hurt. Spaces that engage people in interesting and meaningful ways can encourage interpersonal interaction, dissuading attainment of social interaction through technology alone.
