Who or what inspires you professionally?

In 2018, NPR published an article addressing the role of women architects/designers in a male-dominate industry. Highlighted were multi- ple talented, driven women forging a path in the Vegas design world. The future of woman archi- tects inspires me.

Kristin Metcalf

Bio:

The Great designer, Kristin Metcalf, although born in New Mexico, has resided in Las Vegas her entire life thus far. As the daughter of a UNLV geology professor & avid Runnin’ Rebels basketball fan, she was ecstatic to learn of UNLV’s School of Architecture reputable interior design program. A single mother of a exuberant young daughter, Kristin has always thrived to set an example of hard work and determination. Outside of design and motherhood, she enjoys hiking, kayaking, camping, cooking and her dog Maximus.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

As a child, I enjoyed arranging the furniture at home to create vignettes and helped in the land- scape design. As a teen, when traveling I cared most to see the buildings/homes in the new cities/towns. My father then suggested a career in design.

What do you do?

I am currently a lead interior designer at a com- mercial firm in Las Vegas called Commercial Design Group, owned by female architect Lisa Pierce. We specialize in bars/taverns and restau- rant, along with hospitality, retail and corporate projects.

What excites you in the work you do?

Although Las Vegas is a fairly “young” city, I most enjoy the challenges of renovating a previously used space, as opposed to a new build. Preserv- ing aspects of the past, re-purposing materials or elements, & creating new design from old excites me.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

In 2019, in collaboration with SPARC Architec- ture, Commercial Design Group’s project Golden Entertainment Office Expansion was awarded a NAIOP Spotlight Award. I was the lead designer on this $3-million detailed-oriented office expan- sion & remodel.
