Bio:

The great designer, Kherby Jean is a 4th year architecture major at Tuskegee University who was born in Haiti. Kherby is pursuing architecture because he is passionate about helping and would like to create affordable housing for people in Haiti. Through faith, knowledge and community, he believes that this is possible. In addition to architecture, Kherby finds joy in acting, drawing, reading, and playing the ukulele. He hopes to have an impact on the future generation and inspire change.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

I first learned about architecture in my senior year of high school, but I always had an interest in building things. My parents thought that I would have been an engineer or work in IT but since I also like drawing, I decided to go for architecture.

What do you do?

Currently I am in school for architecture at Tuske- gee University but I also do freelance work.

What excites you in the work you do?

Under my desire for architecture, my true desire is to help people. My true desire is to mass produce affordable housing for people in need and mostly in my home country. Seeing this happening and getting closer to it is surely what excites me.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

The who is Francis Kere because he went back to his community and built for them. He left to study in a foreign country but came back and devoted his time to his people and that’s what I would like to do and hopefully us Haitians to do as well.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

My most successful achievement is that I am currently working with a non-profit organiza- tion that’s building a music school in Rwanda. I am doing a rendering video for them. This is my proudest achievement because I get to help stu- dents in Africa.

Featured Project Description:

The Celebration Project is a space where people come together and find their roots in Africa through food and music. This project is located northwest of Accra Ghana and was inspired by the year of return. An event where people of African descent go back to Ghana to celebrate culture and African history. My most important goal for this project was to portray the African culture. The bamboo structure was inspired by architect Francis Kere and the market area was inspired by flea markets in Haiti.
