Who or what inspires you professionally?
 

I want to inspire other women to be able to see themselves in my profession. There are very few female project managers, especially in general contracting.

KARLI MATTSON

Bio:

The great designer Karli Mattson has a BachelorÕs degree in Mechanical Engineering, complemented by minors in Mathematics and Sustainable Engineering. She has a one-year-old child and has been married for five years. Karli enjoys sass, comic relief, expletives, and diving into a (smutty) book.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

The first time I stepped foot on a jobsite was as an intern in Calhan, CO. It was 300 men and me. Working alongside a crew not only to build, but to support them from the office, was when I decided I wanted to be a part of the building process.

What do you do?

I am a Project Manager for Scull Construction Services, Inc. She has worked there for 6 years, on xx number of projects, managing upwards of $20 million dollars.

 

What excites you in the work you do?

I love the challenge in building: bringing projects into budget, coordinating with trades, resolving disputes. Working through how to take the dream and make it a reality.

I want to inspire other women to be able to see themselves in my profession. There are very few female project managers, especially in general contracting.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

Being able to manage the GSA VA CBOC is my proudest achievement. This was a large-scale, high dollar project with coordination challenges that required hundreds of questions, tailored solutions, and advanced preparation.

Featured Project Description:

The GSA VA CBOC is a 50,000 sf single level clinic based out of Rapid City, SD featuring an extended canopy covering the drive through drop off entrance and more than 300 parking spaces. There are 70+ exam, lab, audiology, radiology, counseling, and procedure rooms to care for veterans in the western half of South Dakota. There was extensive coordination between the GSA, VA, Owner and Contractor to help this project come together.
