Bio:

Johan is a Studio Director at Bates Smart Melbourne. He specialises in the early design and planning stages of the creative process, working with clients and sites to establish the conceptual basis and trajectory of a project. Particularly motivated by the artistic, technological and cultural pursuits of architecture, he is committed to the highest standard in the initiation of design concepts establishing the design methodology and systems for others to assist in developing in later stages.

Featured Project Description:

Bates Smart is working with Health Infrastructure to design the new major referral hospital for the Tweed-Byron region. The new hospital will span seven levels and deliver 499 new beds. The design draws inspiration from the region’s rich agrarian past, with a local community that is inextricably connected to the land. The building’s designed into the topography of the site to create a strong dialogue with the land. Bates Smart worked in collaboration with Silver Thomas Hanley on this project.
