SAY IT LOUD - NEW JERSEY Exhibitor
New Jersey Based Designer

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I love visiting thoughtfully designed and crafted buildings. You can tell when a building will age well and it helps us learn how to create spaces and buildings that we hope will stand the test of time.

JENNIFER MOWERY MARSH

Bio:

Since Jennifer Marsh established Mowery Marsh Architects in 2004, the firm has designed many notable residential renovations in Hudson County as well as new homes in NJ and upstate NY. A seamless integration of architecture, interiors, landscape, and Passive House construction has landed the firm features in publications such as Dwell, Residential Design, House Beautiful, Elle Decor, Living Etc, Remodelista, and The New Small House as well as being awarded several AIANJ and AIANYS Honor Awards.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

My dad built our modest but well-crafted house, so I saw the beauty in construction at an early age. That was coupled with my mother’s love of art and furnishings. Then I visited Savannah as a teen, and I truly realized the impact of architecture.

What do you do?

Our practice is just myself and my husband, so we do it all. We work closely with clients, design their dreams, and do it sustainably. So we wear all the hats; designer, detailer, drafter, colorist, illustrator, historian, spec writer, etc ...

What excites you in the work you do?

It's exciting to be able to visualize an environment, go through the months and years of work that it takes to get it built and then stand back and say that's what was in my head and now its a reality.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

I love visiting thoughtfully designed and crafted buildings. You can tell when a building will age well and it helps us learn how to create spaces and buildings that we hope will stand the test of time.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

We have built a portfolio of beautiful Passive House homes with clients having varying styles and goals. At the same time, raising a family where I was able to always be present. Being a residential architect allowed me to do that.

Featured Project Name:

York Street Passive Townhouse

Featured Project Location:

Jersey City

Featured Project Completion Date:

February 2021

Role in Featured Project:

Designer & Project Architect

Featured Project Description:

A 1880s townhouse was reimagined into a light filled 4-story Net Zero certified Passive House. A vertical core element with detached hallway bridges allows natural light from a top floor courtyard to spill down into the lower floors. PH construction provides the highest air quality and sound protection from a busy city environment. Row house structures that make up our dense, urban fabric deserve a new life that is packed full of function, artistry, and innovation, all within a modest footprint.
