Bio:

The great designer,  Gozde was born and raised in Izmir, Turkey. She attended Beykent University in Istanbul where she received her Bachelor of Science in Architecture. After completing her undergraduate studies, Gozde decided to apply to universities abroad. She continued her education at Miami University, studying and working as a graduate assistant. Gozde believes that a free society is an active one, and as a designer, she will keep reflecting the core values of equality on her work.

 

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

Architecture is an evolving process that allows us to progress as a society. I decided to pursue architecture when I become more aware of the political environment in Turkey. We are desperate to protect what we have as a community and do better.

 

What do you do?

I currently work in a design firm in DC as a design professional specialized in healthcare projects.

What excites you in the work you do?

Design for Equality. Architecture is a great plat- form to be loud and fill the gap of humanity. I believe that we, as designers, have a great re- sponsibility to overcome issues of discrimination, housing policies, and accessibility in the built world.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

Diversity inspires me the most. The collaboration between creative minds gets only stronger with different cultural backgrounds and identities.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

My proudest professional achievement is working on a sustainable 2,682-bed hospital campus in Is- tanbul, Turkey. The project is expected to improve access to high quality health services considering the historical and anticipated population.

Featured Project Description:

Kagithane is an important hub in Istanbul, Turkey because of its location, and its connections to central public transportation network. However, the area is surrounded by illegal settlements that suffers from poor housing and health conditions. The architectural relationship between each housing unit and public spaces has been established inspired by the physical form of the topography and scale in order to provide equal opportunities for all residents.

Featured Project Description:

My experience attending the Gezi park protests in 2013, where thousand of Turkish citizens
were striving for freedom, inspired me to propose an architectural design of a democratic public space. I started working in the macro scale to understand the connection between landscape and movement.This process led me to create a network pattern by discovering all the potential sites and street connectivity. The idea is not restructuring the entire city but rather developing spaces in different scales.

The project involves the development of a 2,682-bed hospital campus in the Çekmece region of Istanbul, Turkey under a 28.5-year construction. Considering Istanbul’s increasing population growth, the construction of new healthcare facilities is critical. Improved and/or new infrastructure will also contribute to improved energy efficiency by encouraging sustainable practices in Turkey’s public hospitals.
