How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?
I have always been interested in physically putting things together, whether Legos, circuits, or in the sandbox with my best friend. In middle school I was building in CO2 cars and small engines. As I grew, so did my desire for what I was building.
What do you do?
I do structural design, analysis, and detailing for building structures of various materials: concrete, steel, masonry, and wood. I am responsible for coordination with the rest of the design team as well as construction administration.
What excites you in the work you do?
It excites me when my son is able to play at a park that I designed, or I pick up a guest at FLL, or I see a community event being held at the Urban League of Broward County. I am proud that I was a part of providing such facilities in our community.
Who or what inspires you professionally?
I am inspired by my desire to represent well the underrepresented. Diversity within the field of structural engineering is still limited. I hope that my success will encourage others to follow their dreams regardless of ethnicity or gender.
What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?
I am proud when one of my projects touches someone that I know personally. It isn’t just the thrill of the engineering challenges, but also the love of contributing to the community that makes me proud to be a part of the Built Environment.
