Bio:
The great designer , Colby C. Mitchell is a native of Marianna, Arkansas, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Architecture degree, both from the University of Memphis. He is a Project Manager for Self + Tucker Architects, located in Memphis, TN. He is also an entrepreneur Graphic Designer with his upstart business, Detail 7, and widely known for his “72360” zip code designs. Colby is also a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and a 2017 Top 40 Under 40 Urban Elite Professional.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?
I was first introduced to the profession by my mother, a now retired art teacher. Entering high school, I was going to take carpentry as an elective. My mother, recognizing my artistic talents encouraged me to take drafting courses. And here I am!

What do you do?
I am a Project Manager for Self + Tucker Architects and a Graphic Designer for my small business, Detail 7. My mantra is “Dope Ideas ONLY!”

What excites you in the work you do?
Service to the community and inspiring young people is what excites me! As a student mentor and avid Career Day participant, bringing more awareness to the career of architecture is something I choose to make a priority.

Who or what inspires you professionally?
Black Designers and Creatives inspire me and forward-thinkers! Afrofuturism is also a particular area of interest for me!

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?
Being selected as the design firm for my son’s new middle school and acting as Project Manager.

Featured Project Description:
The new Leadership Prep Middle School significantly expands the School Campus with an innovative and highly efficient 28,000 SF pre-engineered metal building. A new Cafeteria and Gymnasium will accommodate the entire K-8 school of 180 students. The new Middle School Classroom block is two stories, linearly oriented to respond to the site conditions and proximity to the support spaces (Admin, Gym, Cafe). Notably, STA is also working with the Students to engage them in the design process.
