Who or what inspires you professionally?

As a Mexican American, first member of the family to graduate Elementary School and now First Generation Professional, I am inspired to be an example to the future generations of the Latino community.

ANTONIO TIRADO

Bio:

Antonio Tirado is a native of Memphis, Tennessee, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Architecture and Interior Design in 2016 from the University of Memphis. He also earned a Master of Architecture degree in 2018 from the University of Memphis. He is now Project Coordinator / Project Manager for Self+Tucker Architects. He has worked on various projects including museum, education, churches, and multi-family residential projects.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

As a child, sometimes I would accompany my father, a masonry worker, to his workplace. There, I learned about the construction documents and architecture. With my mother's support, I decided to pursue my interest in becoming an architect.

What do you do?

I am a project coordinator and project manager for Self+Tucker Architects. Thanks to the firm's dedication to emerging professionals, I am involved in all phases of the projects, from the conceptual phase to construction administration.

What excites you in the work you do? 

Seeing the designs come to life and watching the clients’ positive reactions as they interact and experience the spaces is what gets me excited and makes everything I do much more enjoyable.

Who or what inspires you professionally? 

As a Mexican American, first member of the family to graduate Elementary School and now First Generation Professional, I am inspired to be an example to the future generations of the Latino community.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

Earning my Master of Architecture degree from the U of M and shortly afterwards was given the 2019 Outstanding Master’s Thesis Award by the Tennessee Council of Graduate Schools, which honors the best thesis submitted at Tennessee-based universities.

Featured Project Description:

The autism center, Memphis Academic & Behavioral Learning Environment (ABLE), provides a place that offers environments for learning, discovering, and communicating by employing strategies aimed at improving children’s social development, helping them to reconnect with their kinesthetic awareness and with their environment through empathic design. The autism center also provides resources for both parents and the community seeking to learn more about the autism spectrum.
