Who or what inspires you professionally?

My daughter. Every day I wake up wanting to positively impact the world with my work. I feel the need to work tirelessly to face the current and future climate challenges that we will be subject to while keeping the hope that others will do the same.

ALEJANDRA LIRA-PANTOJA

Bio:

I’m originally from Mexico where I obtained my master’s degree in Coastal Engineering. I moved to the US in 2016 after working in academia where I learned the foundations for my work. I bring several years of experience in developing innovative waterfront infrastructure. My expertise lies in the numerical modeling of coastal processes, including waves, currents, and sediment transport. I use the results from these as a tool to inform the design process to ensure successful outcomes.

How did you first learn about architecture and when did you decide that built environment profession was an area of interest for you?

Originally from Mérida, a colonial city, I developed a passion for its vibrant architecture. I entered the field in Civil Engineering driven by a social perspective with the motivation to effect positive change in the built environment.

What do you do?

As a Coastal Engineer, I apply my expertise in the theory of coastal processes to create and construct waterfront systems. These are found in locations where water and land interact significantly, such as ocean fronts, lakes, river mouths, etc.

What excites you in the work you do?

I’m driven by a passion for community enhancement, recognizing that every project can improve the quality of life for the people it serves. As one of the few women in the industry, I’m committed to inspire and empower others to pursue engineering.

Who or what inspires you professionally?

My daughter. Every day I wake up wanting to positively impact the world with my work. I feel the need to work tirelessly to face the current and future climate challenges that we will be subject to while keeping the hope that others will do the same.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment or achievement?

The Illinois Beach State Park project, where I was an integral part of the engineering team that developed a protection system to restore about 5 miles of coastline that was severely eroded, putting nature preserves and critical habitat in danger.

Featured Project Name:

South Padre Island Marine Park and Marina

Featured Project Location:

South Padre Island, Texas

Featured Project Completion Date:

TBD

Role in Featured Project:

Coastal Engineer | Project Manager

Featured Project Description:

Proposing an Engineering with Nature approach, the Marina will feature a harbor protection system that veers from traditional breakwaters. A network of islands will protect the harbor, redirect currents, & control sedimentation. Extensive coastal analyses were done to ensure these structures won’t affect existing habitat but will include features for native species to settle. This marina design showcases resilient infrastructure, fostering economic growth and marine habitat opportunities.
